" Rest in Me."
Updated: Oct 17, 2022

“All of these things you are worried about but only this one thing matters--your relationship with Me.”
The Lord spoke these words to me last week as I was sitting on the couch, worried and concerned about everything I had to do. “God, I've got to do this and then this and then that...Lord, how will I do it all?” I’d begun to sense the Lord tugging on my heart to position myself for me to hear from Him; I knew He wanted to speak and He spoke the above words to me and inclined it on my heart that He was speaking to me from a place of Luke 10:38-42 NKJV.
In the text, Jesus has just been received by Martha into her home; her sister, Mary, is also present. Now, Martha is extensively concerned about serving Jesus, while Mary is sitting at Jesus’ feet and hearing His word. Martha, clearly bothered by her sister not helping out, asks Jesus if he cares that her sister isn’t helping her and if he could tell her to do so. Jesus’ response is unexpected. I mean, shouldnt her sister be helping her serve Jesus and not sitting down being “lazy?” Not according to Jesus. His response to her is, “Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:41-42 KJV). Wow. Imagine how Martha felt in that moment...Maybe embarrassed?
What was Jesus saying to Martha? Was He telling her to just sit at His feet and not be concerned about responsibilities? Choose time with Him over the things she’s responsible for? Neglect her responsibilities and serving Him? I don’t believe that’s what Jesus meant, exactly; I don’t believe that Jesus wanted Martha to neglect her responsibilities and I, too, don’t believe He wants us to either.
So, if we don’t neglect responsibilities, what do we do? We complete tasks and responsibilities from a place of rest; peace; joy; contentment--from a place of sitting and hearing (v. 39) with our relationship with Jesus and the peace that comes with a relationship with Jesus being the foundation and not from a place of being cumbered (or hindered) with/by other things (in Martha’s case here, serving).
Make Jesus your number one and in Him being your number one, don’t become so consumed with responsibilities and tasks that you neglect the One who can give you peace in the midst of you completing the tasks. He is your portion and wants you to cater to your responsibilities from a place of rest in Him; and therefore, choosing that good part, the better part...communing and resting in Him; sitting at His feet; hearing His Word.
Will you find yourself at the feet of Jesus today before becoming so cumbered by day to day tasks? He’s waiting on you 😉
Before I go, I want to leave you with this scripture. I pray that it blesses you and reminds you of the Father's goodness today:
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” ~Matthew 11:28-30
With Love and Peace,
Until next time,
LaGerrica
